I’ve been interested in learning different languages an d cultures since I was a child. During my bachelor’s degree I was lucky to visit China for the first time an d study at Beijing Language an d Culture University. It was the most exciting experience in my life. The experience was so positive that I decided to move to Shanghai after I graduated to pursue a Chinese master’s degree. Because of my passion an d skill for speaking Chinese, I was awarded the Shanghai’s Government Scholarship. It was a dream come true, but it was also the greatest challenge in my life. I was the only foreign student in the program, an d all the classes were taught in Chinese. I eventually adjusted to the total immersion language environment, an d in those three years I learned about the Chinese education system, an d how to communicate effectively in written an d oral Chinese. At the end of the three year program, I wrote a 60-page master’s thesis. Researching, writing, an d defending my thesis in Chinese gave me the confidence to translate difficult materials effectively.

One of the most rewarding experiences as a corporate trainer was teaching a business English communications course to a local Shanghai bank. I taught using a blend of Chinese an d English to explain Western business practices an d other cultural differences to bank employees so they can successfully build international relationships.
